Children’s feet grow quickly, and shoes that are too small or too loose affect how they walk and play. Buying a size up “to grow into” seems economical, but it changes how the child walks. Here is a more reliable approach.
How much room to leave
With your child standing, press at the front of the shoe. You want about a thumb’s width (roughly 1 cm) between the longest toe and the front. Less than that is too tight. A lot more than that is too big, and it can make a child trip or drag their feet.
Always fit them standing
A child’s foot spreads and lengthens when weight is on it. Fit both feet, standing, with the socks they will wear to school. Ask them to walk, run a few steps and crouch. A heel that lifts or toes that curl are signs the size is wrong.
Do not rely on what the child says
Young children often cannot tell you a shoe is too small, because soft feet adapt. Check the shape of the shoe on the foot, look for red marks after wearing, and watch for a child who suddenly refuses to wear a pair.
How often to re-check
Young children can outgrow a size in a few months. As a general guide, check the fit every two to three months for toddlers and small children, and every three to four months for older kids. A growth spurt can shorten that.
Velcro or laces?
For younger children, velcro straps are easier to put on and let them be independent. Laces suit older children who can tie them securely. Either way, the strap or laces should hold the heel firmly in place.
School shoes vs sports shoes
- School or party shoes: loafers, ballerinas and sandals for formal days and functions. Look for a flexible sole, soft lining and a secure fit. They are not meant for running games.
- Sports sneakers: lightweight, with a cushioned sole and grip for PT periods, playground games and long walks. They should bend easily at the ball of the foot.
A child who runs around daily benefits from having separate pairs, because it spreads the wear and lets each pair dry between uses.
Bring your child with you
The best way to size is with the child present. At Icon Soley, size trials are free , and our kids’ sports and party collections include boys’ and girls’ styles. If you are unsure whether a pair fits, we would rather you try one more size than take home the wrong one.
