A wedding in Gujarat is rarely a two-hour event. Between the ceremony, photographs, dinner and dancing, you can be on your feet for six hours or more. The pair that looks perfect in the mirror is not always the one that survives the night, so it helps to plan footwear early, well before the day.
Rule one: buy early and break them in
Buy at least two weeks before the event. Wear the new pair at home for an hour or two on a few evenings. This shows you hot spots while there is still time to exchange them for a different size or style. Never wear a brand-new pair for the first time on the wedding day.
For men
- Patent leather oxfords or loafers give the polished shine that works with sherwanis, suits and bandhgalas. Wipe them clean before you leave and carry a soft cloth for touch-ups.
- Loafers are practical for ceremonies where you remove footwear several times. They are quicker to slip on and off than laced shoes.
- Match the metal. Gold or antique detail suits warm, festive outfits. Black and silver suit a darker, modern look.
For women
- Block heels spread your weight better than stilettos and are more stable on lawns and uneven venue floors.
- Platforms and wedges raise your height with a smaller difference between heel and toe, so there is less strain on the ball of the foot.
- Cushioned footbeds and ankle or back straps keep the foot in place when you dance.
- Gold and embellished sandals pair well with lehengas and sarees, and they are light for warm halls.
For kids
Children need footwear they can walk, run and sit in for hours. Party loafers and ballerinas for kids look dressy but must have soft insides and a flexible sole. Check there is room for growth, and our kids’ shoe size guide shows how. Velcro straps are easier for little ones than laces.
A day-of checklist
- Bring a small pair of comfortable flats or chappals for the later hours.
- Keep cushioned insoles or heel grips handy.
- Clean and polish shoes the evening before.
- Check that the sole has grip. Polished marble floors are slippery.
